This week in class we looked at haptics, which are the types of touch that convey nonverbal messages. The types include ritualistic touch, positive touch, control touch, playful touch, task-related touch, and hybrid touch. In this post I wanted to look at the music video for the song "Sanctuary" by Joji. Note: you might want to watch the video to understand the events I am going to talk about. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWN81V7ojOE
Right when the video starts we see our main character fighting with someone. This is task related touch because he is using touch in order to subdue his enemy. The next time there is an example of nonverbal touch is when the main characters best friend flicks a worker on the ear/back of head (its hard to tell which one exactly) to wake them up. This could be read a couple different ways, but I would call it control touch as the touch was done to control what the person who was flicked was doing. After that was see an example of ritualistic touch when the main characters grieve the deaths of the aliens they were dancing with. They closes the eyes of one of the dead aliens. Next, there was a good example of playful touch when the crew of the spaceship is celebrating and they are hugging in a group and singing together.
I think this music video did a fantastic job at telling its story through nonverbals and showed a large array of haptic touch.
